A new social media button may change the way we purchase things online. Google has introduced a ‘Buy’ button to their Google Beta program, giving merchants the opportunity to sell their product while advertising. The button is a small ‘Buy’ on the top of the product ad.
If you want to buy a product via Google search you first need to sign up to Google Wallet. Google Wallet is a way of sending or receiving money, using either the app or just a Gmail address. If a purchaser clicks on the ‘Buy’ button, he or she will be directed to a Google hosted page where the product can be purchased.
Google have not done much publicity on this new feature which makes us think it is in the early planning phases, bar the fact that it is a live feature. The option does appear on the Google Merchant Center. If you log on to the Google Merchant Center and make your way to ‘Purchases on Google’ you will find the new service described as ‘helping shoppers to easily purchase on Google, growing conversions and driving new customers.’
The Beta program is a little limited but this may well be the early stages. At the moment the audience is limited as only Android users can see the ‘Buy’ button. Perhaps there is a way to go with development and perhaps with time Google Beat and Google Purchases will compete the e-commerce giants. Time will tell.
