You’ve followed all the rules. Your website is current and up to date, streamlined, looks great, has excellent content and visuals, your contacts are there, all the links are easy to use, but – it’s not quite working for you and you don’t know why.
Here are a few mistakes that people make when building websites that can be detrimental to SEO. Check them out and talk to your website developer.
H1 Tags
Your website can look amazing but if you haven’t done good SEO and SEM, or google ads, Adwords and a whole lot of other clever digital marketing tricks, people may not find you. One of the ways to ensure that you rate high in search engines is to have an H1 tag. Very often website developers remove the H1 tag but your website needs it. It is one of the first things search engine crawlers look at to find out what your website is all about.
Keep the H1 tag.
Clarity
One should be able to see what your website is all about by looking at the home page. If you are selling washing machines, your home page should clearly show that. Likewise, if you are an IT company selling software, your home page must show that too. Don’t mess around with anything flowery. People should look, see and understand what you’re all about immediately.
Large visuals and media
Be careful with your visuals. Photographs, videos and any media files should not impact on your site speed. If uploading takes a long time, you will not rank highly in search engines. If your site loads quickly, Google will reward you. If you are slow, Google will push you to the bottom of the page. Your visuals must look good but they must be quick too.
Quick uploads
As above, make sure your site is speedy. You want to have great content but you also don’t want content that is too large for your site. Have a look at Google, at the Page Speed Insights Test. You can test your site and Google will tell you if the content is too much or if your speed is just fine. Google will also suggest to you how to optimise your website by reducing the amount of content or the size of the images. Screaming Frog is another site you can look at to test the size of your visuals. If your visuals are too big ,Google or Screaming Frog will teach you how to make them smaller.
Popups
Popups can drastically impact your SEO so be careful to avoid pop ups. Pop Ups are incredibly bad on digital, making everything slow and just don’t use them!
Text in Images
Text but not be on your image, rather under or on top of it. Search Engines see images differently to the way people do and cannot read text on top of an image. Text on an image will send you straight down to the bottom of the SEO rankings.
Subheadings are good, content is good, visual description is good, but anything on top of a pic is not good.
Infinite Scroll
Infinite scrolling is very popular but if it is not done properly it can also send you to the bottom of the search engine pile. Infinite scrolling loads content each time the reader gets to the bottom of the page, meaning the reader can keep scrolling and reading. But if your pagination is set up wrong, the search engine won’t regencies your pages.
If you use Infinite Scrolling on a site with 100 pages, but you only show 10 of the most recent pages, the search engine will only see the 10. You need to make all the pages search friendly. You can do this using by going to the Google Webmaster Blog who will teach you how.
Thin Content
Content is King, especially if it is good content. Your product page and your service page are the mosts important on your website. If you do good keywords and key phrases, you will get high rankings. Some web developers prefer a ‘thin content’ allowing users to easily see product. But thin content can also mean search engines don’t find you.
You need keywords to be found. Target keywords give you higher rankings.
Always have a service and a product page. This way, your search engine can optimise you organically, using your target keywords.
The best SEO practice is to have one keyword per page. This makes it clear to search engines what your page is all bout and you can get ranked accordingly. If you include multiple products or keywords on one page, the search engine gets confused.
Don’t have too much text on your service and product page, but have enough so the product can be identified and ranked. The copy should be to the point and clear, but don’t overdo it. Descriptive content helps, positive content helps, informative content helps, interesting content helps. Don’t waffle, your pages will get lost by search engines.
In conclusion:-
Work hard on your search engine optimization. You can have an astonishing site but unless you follow the SEO rules, you wont have any customers. Be smart, be clear, be creative and look to Google for help. There is a ton of information on SEO on their website. Use it.
